Partnered Evaluation Initiatives

QUERI Partnered Evaluation Initiatives (PEIs), which are co-funded by operations partners, evaluate programs or policies that align with national VA priorities and have the potential to greatly impact Veteran care. Working with VA partner offices, QUERI recently funded three new PEIs—each of which has the potential to impact high-priority topics in VA.

  • Identification and Management of Functional Impairment and Frailty for Older Veterans in VA Primary Care: VA’s functional status screening initiative is a patient-centered, low-burden intervention to improve measurement in VA primary care settings of older Veterans’ ability to perform daily activities. Rebecca Brown, MD, MPH, of HSR’s Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research (CCDOR), and Francesca Nicosia, PhD, are leading an evaluation of this initiative in collaboration with VA’s Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care, Office of Primary Care, and Office of Nursing Services.
  • Mobile Lung Screening Evaluation and Outcomes (MOSAIC): Nearly 8,000 Veterans are diagnosed and treated in the VA healthcare system each year for lung cancer, but access to lung cancer screening and uptake across VA have been uneven. Nichole Tanner, MD, of HSR’s Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC) is leading a team that is evaluating innovative mobile lung cancer screening to reduce drive time to a VA CT scanner, improve equity of lung cancer screening, and optimize resource use. The project is being conducted in collaboration with VA’s Lung Precision Oncology Program (LPOP).
  • Implementation and Impact of the Updated Relationship Health and Safety Screening National Rollout: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is commonly experienced by women Veterans and is associated with negative physical, mental, and social outcomes. Galina Portnoy, PhD, of HSR’s Pain Research, Informatics, Multi-morbidities, and Education Center (PRIME), is leading this effort to maximize annual screening for IPV among Veterans of all genders by assessing the implementation and impact of the updated Relationship Health and Safety screener. The project is being conducted in collaboration with VA’s Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP).
