Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation

From December 10–13, 2023, the National Institutes of Health and AcademyHealth cohosted the 16th Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) in Arlington, VA. QUERI helped organize a VA investigator panel and a workshop.

The investigator panel, “Novel Approaches to Addressing Health System and Policy Challenges: 25 Years of the VA QUERI Program,” presented an overview of QUERI history. Since 1998, QUERI has been committed to partnering with health system leaders and policymakers, providers, and Veterans to scale, spread, and sustain evidence-based practices across the VA healthcare system. This panel session highlighted how QUERI-funded interdisciplinary teams are leveraging innovative methods and adaptive evaluation designs to address time-sensitive healthcare and policy priorities and to accelerate sustainable care improvements. The session was chaired by JoAnn Kirchner, MD, of QUERI’s Implementation Facilitation Learning Hub and HSR’s Center for Mental Healthcare and Outcomes Research (CeMHOR), and included Erin Finley, PhD, of HSR’s Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation, and Policy (CSHIIP); Nazanin Bahraini, PhD, of HSR’s Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value Driven Care; Sarah Wilson, PhD, of HSR’s Durham Center of Innovation to Accelerate Discovery and Practice Transformation (ADAPT); and Shari Rogal, MD, of HSR’s Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP).

Also at the D&I conference, QUERI’s Center for Evaluation and Implementation Resources (CEIR) organized an Early Career Technical Assistance Workshop for early career investigators and staff interested in implementation science. The workshop included speakers from NIH, VA, DHHS, and highly ranked universities, and featured:

  • Presentations on funding opportunities related to D&I.
  • Best-practice D&I methods and recommendations from experts.
  • Discussions of practical considerations for early career investigators and staff interested in dissemination and implementation science.

The workshop’s 48 attendees represented diverse organizations and prestigious universities, including Columbia and Harvard Medical School, and 34 attendees received project-specific feedback—including funding opportunities and practical considerations—from VA and NIH experts.
